Case Study

Dr.Anne is the director of computing resources at Western Arizona University. The state legislature has recently allocated a pool of money for computing enhancements at WAU. The funds are to be used to upgrade the computer network infrastructure at WAU and to purchase additional computer lab equipment. The legislature’s intent is to provide fast network access to all university offices, classrooms, and labs. Dr. Anne is responsible for recommending which computer network technology would be best for the University.

Dr. Anne feels that only two network technology alternatives would be suitable, but the decision of which one is best has been difficult. The two technology alternatives are a fiber-optic cable network and a wireless technology network. A fibre optic cable network would initially cost $1.3 million and would require an annual maintenance expenditure of $140,000. A wireless technology network would initially cost $1.9 million and require an annual maintenance expenditure of $90,000.

Many other factors are important in choosing the type of network technology. Each technology has different strengths that would benefit students and faculty. Following Dr. Anne direction, a graduate assistant prepared the following information to help with the decision:

Factors    Factor weight    Scores
        Fibre optic    Wireless
Economic factors:
Initial cost    0.10    $1,300,000    $1,900,000
Annual maintenance cost    0.25    $140,000    $90,000
Other factors:
Data signal quality    0.15    1.0    0.7
Connection convenience    0.10    0.6    1.0
Data transmission speed    0.10    0.8    0.6
Data bandwidth    0.10    0.8    0.7
Figure upgradeability    0.10    0.6    0.8
Training effort    0.05    0.8    0.6
Implementation time    0.05    0.4    0.8

Questions
1.    Use the relative aggregate scores approach to compare the technologies.
2.    Which technology would you advise Dr. Anne to use? Why?
3.    What other factors should be considered in the decisions?

Case Study

Sandi is a Sales Manager of a Pharmaceutical company for western region. Thirty four sales persons report to Sandi and sell pharmaceuticals to retail chains and stores throughout 11 western states. During the past five years, Sandi has put a team of salesperson that is second to none in its ability to cooperate. These sales persons appear to be happy with their jobs in all respects, including pay, supervision, attitude, toward the company, and morale. Sandi feels that she has done everything in her power to make each sales person in her group happy with his or her particular job.
In recent months, the company’s sale in western region has declined 10 percent when compared to comparable period in the past. Sandi has racked her brain to come up with some reason, such as the decline in overall economy or competitor activity, to explain the sales decline. After much investigation, however, Sandi has concluded that there has been a drop-off in productivity among salespersons because of lack of motivation.
Questions
1.    Use motivation theory to explain how employees who are happy with their jobs could be unproductive.
2.    What was Sandi doing wrong? What should Sandi do to correct this situation and improve the productivity of sales staff of western region?
