ITM201
Computer Networks
Assignment No.I
Assignment Code: 2013ITM201B1 Last Date of Submission: 15th October 2013
Maximum Marks:100
Attempt all the questions. All the questions are compulsory and carry equal marks.
Section-A
Ques. 1 What is the difference between ISO and OSI? Explain the functions of each layer of an
OSI model?
Ques. 2 What are the components of a data communications system? What is the difference
between a port address, a logical address and a physical address?
Ques. 3 Discuss why it is important for organizations to enforce policies restricting use of
employee-owned hardware and software and unauthorized copies of software
Ques. 4 Compare and contrast following types of multiplexing
1).frequency division multiplexing
2).time division multiplexing
3).statistical time division multiplexing
4).wavelength division multiplexing
Section-B
Case Study
There is a Mobile Telephony system which comprises of a Traffic Control Sub-System (TCS) & Gateway Station Sub-System (GSS). This network has to be managed by providing management of data of these two sub-systems. TCS Supports reporting of data in SNMP while GSS does not support but uses proprietary protocol.
Case Questions:
5. a. How would network data for TCS & GSS be managed? What network management protocol is adopted at Network Management System (NMS)? What protocol is used for TCS network management & GSS network management?
b. What type of network data shall be managed?
c. How would persistence in configuration data of network be ensured?

Assignment No.II
Assignment Code: 2013ITM201B2 Last Date of Submission: 15th November 2013
Maximum Marks:100
Attempt all the questions. All the questions are compulsory and carry equal marks.
Section-A
Ques. 1 Describe the following:
i) Public Key Infrastructure System
ii) SNMP & its usage in Network Management
iii) MIB
iv) FCAPS
Ques. 2 What is the Internet? Describe any three IP-based application layer protocols?
Ques. 3 Compare and contrast link state and distance vector routing algorithms.
Ques. 4 Explain different categories of network that is LAN, WAN and MAN. Also write one protocol name used for each type of network.
Section-B
Case Study
There is one computer in New Delhi & another in Bangalore which need to be connected with a data rate of 10 Kbps. There are different ways to achieve inter-connectivity using any of the following options:
• Coaxial Cable
• Infrared Communication
• Micro-Wave Link
• Satellite Communications
• Optical Fiber
• GPRS
• Telephone Line Modems
• Leased Lines
• ISDN
• ATM
• Proprietary Communications Technology
Each approach has its advantages/disadvantages & cost. Some approaches may be feasible but some may not be feasible.
Case Questions :
5. a. Describe the above-mentioned connectivity options.
b. How would you connect these computers & why? Give justifications – if cost, performance, & feasibility are important considerations?
c. If instead of two computers, there were two LAN(s) (with data rates of 10 Gbps) which had to be interconnected, then how would you connect them? Give justifications.
d. What is Infrared communication? Would you use Infrared communication to achieve connectivity in either of the following scenarios:
I. Connect two computers with data rate of 10 Kbps
II. Connect two LAN(s) with data rate of 10 Gbps
Give justifications to support your answer.
