Case Study
In 2000, India exported nearly 10 lakhs bicycles. In contract China exported around 20 million cycles. In the standard segment, bicycles are priced around Rs. 2000. Similar Chinese bicycles sell for $ 22 to 27 in African Markets where they compete with exports from India. Even if the landed cost of Chinese standard models is at $ 22, they cost about more than Rs. 1500 at retail level due to other costs such as import duty and retailer’s margin etc. Hero Cycles, a major producer in India has taken initiative to meet this challenge and has set up its R & D Department to upgrade its operations.

Now it wishes to teach its rural students the modern technology of agriculture through remote campuses and with tie up with a foreign agricultural university.
Question 1. What do you advise the organisation about technical innovation in its campus for effective dissemination of relevant technology?
Question 2. What type of Technology Transfer arrangement is possible?
Question 3. Do you think level of Technology absorption by rural students will be high in such an arrangement? Discuss pitfalls and methods to counter it.
